My first order of business (after cleaning out all the clutter that is) was to make the built in desk not so desk-y. I thought if I could camouflage it somehow the nursery would look, well, like more of a nursery. I came up with the solution of hanging fabric from the desk top to hide the drawers using Velcro's Sticky-Back Hook and Loop Fastener Tape with Dispenser 3/4 x 15 ft. Roll White
Here's what I did. I cut the Velcro into strips and stuck one side underneath the lip of the desk top.
I then attached the opposite side of the Velcro and removed the paper protecting the sticky side. Next I started to hang my fabric from the Velcro. I made sure to line up my fabric before hand so I wouldn't have to stick and remove the fabric if it all possible, just to make the stickiness last as long as possible.
I did this all the way around until the desk bottom was completely covered!
I wish I would've ironed the fabric first =) I guess I could steam it....
The fabric makes the desk still functional in the sense that I haven't completely removed all of our paper work from the desk. I figure this will last until our little twinkies start moving around and therefore tear the fabric down. At that point I plan to make it more of a toy storage unit. Searching Pinterest for ideas for that!
This same technique can be used for other things as well. My little girls like to hide under the air hockey table in our playroom so I decided to take some fabric and make them a fun play house! Bonus ~ hides the clutter!
Stay tuned for Part 2 of my Office to Twin Nursery Reveal on Wednesday to see how I turned the built in book shelf to a dresser and made my own chalkboard labels! See the finished project and mural with all the details in Part 3.
I did this same thing when I wanted to cover my craft stuff under my built in sewing table, only I gathered the material first, sewed on one half of the velcro and then used the opposite velcro side from the sticky part for the edge of the table. You can't sew the sticky, so I had to buy both the sticky and the sewn kind of velcro and use only half of each. It has worked well now for 10 years.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, wish they had Velcro around when my kids were small. They built tents all over the house only to have the books or toys holding up the blankets fall on their heads!
ReplyDeleteThank you both for stopping by! LOVE your idea's Terry ~ much 'tougher' that way! Stay tuned for part 2 on Wednesday =)
ReplyDeleteMarcy, The idea with the fabric is a great idea! I saw yesterday where a mom had painted something built in similar and used the top as the changing table. Maybe you could do that? I like the fabric though, really softens up the space!
ReplyDeleteThat's just what I want to do Corinna ~ changing station! =)
