Donut Cake: Birthday/Easter Edition ~ Taco Tuesday

This year we celebrated my daughters 3rd birthday on Easter Sunday.  You see I come from a BIG family and my Mom boasts of her 17 grandchildren with pride.  So each month we get together for a family birthday party!  I wanted something simple & sweet (like the Easter candy wasn't enough right?).  So I piled the donuts high, sprinkled on some edible grass and Easter'd it up with chocolate eggs & bunnies!

I went with Glazed Donuts for my cake but feel free to grab up your donut of choice!  The same rule applies for the other ingredients:
1 jar of frosting ~ I chose cream cheese .....nom nom nom.....
Edible grass ~ colored coconut or green sprinkles
Candy decorations to match the season ~ being Easter I went with Reeses Pieces Eggs and mini Peter Rabbit foil chocolate bunnies
For this cake I colored a bag of coconut with about 8-10 drops of green food coloring.  Then each donut got a quick swipe of the frosting and then dunked & dabbed into the bowl of 'grass.'  I used a pizza pan covered in foil for my base then started building my cake with an even layer of donuts, then building up.  After my tower o' nests were piled high I added a few eggs or a bunny pressed into the middle of the donuts.  That's it!

With a little imagination a Donut Cake will work for any holiday or occasion!
Mother's Day would be sweet with sugared flowers or marscapone birds.  Have you seen those Bacon Donuts for Father's Day?!! (yuck!)  For the 4th of July I could see the coconut colored in red, white & blue with sparklers on top!  Halloween would be cute with orange frosting and black spider rings.  Endless possibilities.

But this year, for a little girl's 3rd birthday party, Easter was perfect!
